What is 10/20/LIFE?

10/20/LIFE is a term used to refer to Florida’s sentencing statute dealing with enhanced sentences for the use of firearms. There are some crimes that if a firearm is used during the commission of the crime, the minimum mandatory prison sentence is 10 years. If a person discharges the firearm during the commission of the crime, again, the crimes that qualify are listed by statute, then the minimum mandatory prison sentence is 20 years. If someone discharges a firearm and causes death or great bodily harm, again, under a qualifying offense then the minimum mandatory prison sentence in that case is 25 years to life in prison. Hence the name 10/20/LIFE.
