When I can use my handgun to protect myself?

It depends on whether or not the handgun is displayed, or whether the handgun is fired, because the display of a handgun is the use of non-deadly force, and in order to be justified in the use of non-deadly force, you would have to be preventing the imminent use of unlawful force against yourself or another. If you discharge a firearm, that’s considered the use of deadly force, and in order to be justified in the use of deadly force, you’d have to be preventing a forcible felony against yourself or another, or preventing death or great bodily harm to yourself or another.
